BRUSSELS  – 21 October 2024 – The Eclipse Foundation, a leading open source foundation, today announced the release of Eclipse Zenoh 1.0.0, a breakthrough open source protocol that seamlessly integrates communication, storage, and computation in embedded systems and across cloud platforms. This milestone release builds on years of development and real-world deployment experience, delivering new features tailored for developers and engineers in robotics, automotive, and broader edge and IoT sectors.

“Eclipse Zenoh has proven to be a valuable protocol for innovative robotics and automotive applications, and with this release, we expect that trajectory to accelerate,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. “Its unique blend of abstraction, scalability, and high performance make it ideal for complex, real-time applications like advanced robotics.” 

Eclipse Zenoh, which has been in use for several years, unifies data in motion, data at rest, and computations. The 1.0.0 release represents a significant evolution, incorporating insights from industrial deployments to deliver a mature, production-ready solution.

The transition from tethered machines to autonomous and mobile robots introduces distinct communication challenges. The shift towards wireless communication is indispensable for the operation of modern robot communication and their interaction in fleets and with connected equipment.

This paradigm shift brings with it the complexities of ensuring reliable and efficient communication for tele-operation, exacerbated by the inherent instability and constraints associated with wireless technologies but also Internet connectivity in general.

In this article, we will explore how communication protocols work in robotic systems and how the  Zenoh protocol can overcome the challenges faced in this field.

The Imperatives for Communication Protocols in Robotic

The essence of robotic communication requires robust, adaptable protocols for various scenarios and technologies.

With remote control and analytics, robotics systems are increasingly becoming microcontrollers-to-cloud systems.

This is crucial for seamless operation across diverse robotic platforms and auxiliary systems. Protocols must exhibit:

  • Lightweight and efficient design to minimize bandwidth and latency issues.
  • Flexibility across networking technologies like WiFi, 4G, 5G, and Bluetooth.
  • Agility in deployment for dynamic robotic environments, from point-to-point to complex networks.
  • Comprehensive communication patterns, including service invocations, action triggering, and publication/subscription models.
  • Security considerations to protect against cyber threats with measures like TLS and fine-grained access control.
  • Tunability of communication for optimized performance by adjusting message frequency, size, and prioritizing critical data.
  • Ease of integration with other digital ecosystems, requiring compatibility with legacy protocols like MQTT or OPC-UA.

In-Robot Communication Needs

Robotic systems involve multiple software components for functions like navigation, hardware interfacing, and environmental mapping.

These modules must communicate effectively within a single robot, often in high-speed environments where traditional networking may be inadequate.

For intra-robot communication, shared memory offers the highest efficiency. Alternatives like Unix pipes or direct memory access (DMA) are viable but have trade-offs in speed and complexity.

Outbound Robot Communication Optimising Robot-to-Anything

While internal communications are vital, interactions between robots and external controllers are equally critical.

Managing connections within each software component is suboptimal due to overhead and resource contention.

A more efficient approach involves a communication router within the robot to handle all external communications.

This reduces the burden on individual components, lowers the risk of packet collisions, prevents network bloat with irrelevant data, simplifies security configurations, and minimizes attack surfaces.

The Case of Communications in the Robotic Operating System

ROS (Robot Operating System) is an open-source ecosystem providing software libraries and tools for robotic applications.

It allows developers to build applications as nodes, which control one or multiple robots.

ROS 2 introduces a modular design with an abstract middleware interface, allowing communication stack changes.

By default, ROS 2 uses the Data Distribution Service (DDS) middleware for inter-node communications, eliminating the need for a master node.

Nodes discover each other via UDP multicast and communicate peer-to-peer via UDP unicast or multicast. While ROS 2 resolves the single point of failure issue in ROS 1, it introduces new challenges:

  • Scalability Issues: Peer-to-peer communication requires nodes to be aware of all other nodes, causing scalability problems.
  • Heavyweight Discovery Protocol: DDS requires complete discovery of remote nodes, leading to resource-intensive startup and network flooding.
  • Security Concerns: Each node has an open UDP port, increasing the attack surface. Configuring secure communication for each node is complex.
  • Inefficiency in Request/Reply Pattern: Using publication/subscription for requests and replies doubles topics and requires clients to filter irrelevant replies.

Transitioning from ROS 1 to ROS 2 improves modularity and reliability but presents challenges in scalability, discovery protocol overhead, security, and communication inefficiencies.

Understanding these issues is essential for optimizing robotic systems with ROS 2. By focusing on these aspects, developers can create more robust and efficient robotic applications.

How Zenoh protocol overcome these challenges

In July 2023, a survey conducted among ROS users aimed to understand the challenges they face with robotic communications and to explore alternatives to DDS as middleware for ROS.

The survey’s comparative analysis of potential alternatives identified Eclipse Zenoh as the most promising middleware for ROS (read the survey here).

As a result, in May 2024, a new release of ROS 2, named Jazzy Jalisco, introduced the option for developers to experiment with  Zenoh as a middleware.

This release provides initial support, and is intended for the community to experiment, provide feedback and help maturing it.

robotic communication

A Zenoh router in the robot provides several benefits

By default, Zenoh in ROS 2 overcomes challenges from previous versions of ROS. 

  • Rendez-vous Router: Each node connects to the router over the loopback interface. The router shares minimal discovery information, enabling peer-to-peer connectivity within the robot.
  • Resilient Peer-to-Peer Communications: Once established, peer-to-peer communications continue even if the router stops, allowing configuration changes without restarting nodes.
  • Boundary Controller: The router mediates between internal nodes and external systems, routing necessary traffic and downsampling data.
  • Security Enhancement: The router minimizes the attack surface and simplifies security configuration by serving as a unique entry point for external communication.
  • Flexible Transport Support:  Zenoh supports various transports, allowing easy adaptation to communication constraints. Internal communications can use TCP, shared memory, or vsock, while external communications can use TLS, QUIC, or WebSockets.
  • Plug-ins: The Zenoh router supports plugins for interoperability with other protocols (e.g., MQTT, DDS) and databases (e.g., InfluxDB, RocksDB).
  • Rest API: A REST API plugin enables browser communication with the robot via HTTP.
  • Internet Connectivity: Deploy interconnected Zenoh routers from robots to the cloud for secure, global access without complex NAT or firewall configurations.

Zenoh middleware in ROS 2 significantly advances communication in robotic systems, offering improved flexibility, security, and resilience.

Conclusion

The advancement of robotic technologies and their increasing reliance on wireless communications present significant challenges but also opportunities for innovation in communication protocols. 

By adopting Zenoh,  you can have your robots work and scale on wireless networks, and can  leverage a single protocol from the smallest microcontroller on your robot up to the cloud across any network.

We’re happy to announce that the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), the leader in supporting the development of open source software and hardware platforms for robotics, made available a native integration of Zenoh in ROS 2.

To begin with, this integration is available as an experimental release, for the ROS 2 releases Jazzy Jalisco, Rolling Ridley and Iron Irwini.

After thorough consideration, OSRF chose Zenoh to complement the existing support for DDS following a rigorous investigation. It determined that Zenoh is the best potential fit for the needs of ROS users. As a result, it meets the key requirements for current and future robotics applications.

“Zenoh has the potential to resolve difficulties our users have faced in working with DDS middlewares in certain scenarios, such as corporate networks that block the basic network protocol DDS implementations require to function, and globe-spanning remote robotics applications. We look forward to the RMW being well-tested by the community over the next year as we work towards its first full release in 2025,”

Moreover, OSRF has a very large, broad community including roboticists from Fortune 500 organizations and startups. Additionally, it includes academic research labs, government agencies, and hobbyist communities.

In surveying this community, OSRF learned that its users overwhelmingly favoured Zenoh as the top middleware alternative over other options.

We’re fast approaching the day we launch Zenoh 1.0.0 and new features!

It’s more than just another version number. It signifies Eclipse Zenoh’s evolution from a project with potential to robust, reliable software already having global use cases. We’re thrilled to release Zenoh 1.0.0 in the year of the dragon!

The team is currently testing the latest features we want to add for this 1.0.0 version. Our head of Technology, Luca Cominardi, already talked about the new Zenoh features we’ll see in 2024, but not all of them will be in this release. While the team is still working on Zenoh 1.0.0, let’s recap the Zenoh features our users have requested since Zenoh’s inception in 2021.

1. Enhanced API for Zenoh

It’s designed to provide the necessary expressiveness, flexibility, and stability across a variety of programming languages.

This new API is built around a minimal set of well-defined and composable primitives, which allows developers to create more efficient and reliable applications.

The improved API simplifies the development process and ensures that applications built with Zenoh are scalable.

2. Zenoh bridge for ROS

Zenoh’s integration with ROS 1 and ROS 2 are significant features. They allow seamless communication between Zenoh and ROS, enhancing the capabilities of robotic applications. 

Julien Enoch discussed and demonstrated the connectivity with ROS in the video below presented during the Zenoh User Meeting 2023.

These integrations are essential as they open up new possibilities for robotics applications, allowing them to leverage Zenoh’s advanced features, such as efficient data distribution, storage, and network communication. This enhances the functionality of robotics applications and improves their efficiency and reliability, making Zenoh an indispensable tool.

3. Zenoh for Android

Android is one of the most popular mobile OS and perhaps the most widely adopted mobile target for non consumer applications in industries such as automotive, automation, and robotics.

Zenoh now supports Android targets and offers support for both Kotlin and Java APIs. Moreover, thanks to the Zenoh plugins that bridge Zenoh to other protocols, such as MQTT, and ROS2, some integration use cases are now simplified, such as controlling a ROS 2 robot from an Android device.

4. Shared Memory and Zero Copy Support

When dealing with large data payloads such as high resolution images, lidar scans, etc. it is extremely important to be able to share these efficiently across applications when running on the same host.

To support these use cases, Zenoh has added native support for Shared Memory and Zero Copy. Out of the box users have support for POSIX shared memory, and through a plugin system can add support for custom shared memory providers.

These providers are then used into the Zenoh shared memory support that allows to transparently do zero copy between applications that are on the same shared memory domain and transparently send the data to applications that are across the network.

5. Zenoh-Pico

Zenoh-Pico is a significant feature introduced in Zenoh, specifically designed for microcontrollers and embedded systems.

This lightweight implementation is a game-changer for extremely constrained devices, which often struggle with limited resources. Zenoh-Pico enhances the capabilities and features these devices can support, enabling them to participate more fully in network communication.

6. Access Control

Zenoh has supported session authentication through a plugin-system since the very beginning.

Additionally, mTLS and QUIC can also be used to establish authenticated secure channels. Recently we’ve also added Access Control, which allows you to finely control which operations are allowed on key expressions.

7. Zenoh Protocol Dissector for Wireshark

We are committed to providing our robotic experts with robust user-friendly solutions. We have created a Zenoh protocol dissector for Wireshark, which allows you to inspect and understand the Zenoh packets exchanged in your network. It is especially useful when you need to:

  • Troubleshoot network problems
  • Examine security issues
  • Verify network applications
  • Debug protocol implementations
  • Learn about Zenoh’s protocol internals
This feature is an invaluable resource for debugging, as it offers a comprehensive view of the network’s operation, enabling users to identify, rectify any issues and understand network communication, thus empowering users to optimise their network’s performance

8. Zenoh for Web Applications

Web applications constitute an increasingly important part of any distributed system because of their ease of deployment and their security via isolation. The incoming TypeScript/JavaScript API for Zenoh will allow any web application to integrate with a Zenoh system seamlessly. It’ll benefit from its flexibility in communications. Zenoh protocol is able to run efficiently over various transports such as WebSockets, TCP or QUIC.

9. Zenoh-Flow

This is Zenoh’s native Data Flow Programming framework, providing a common abstraction for applications ranging from data centres to microcontrollers. It organises applications as a directed graph of nodes, each representing a computational unit, with arcs representing data streams. This model is the foundation for many application domains, including Analytics, Autonomous Driving, and Robotics. Zenoh-Flow is designed to handle complex graphs and significantly improves execution time.

Over the past decade, technology has advanced rapidly. ZettaScale maintains its commitment to innovation, especially in the automotive sector. Our Eclipse Zenoh protocol plays a crucial role here.

Eclipse SDV, our collaborator, focuses on open-source software for automotive architectures. It provides a platform for collaboration and encourages companies to create blueprints addressing real automotive needs.

Eclipse Zenoh, a key project of Eclipse SDV, is essential for real automotive applications. We’re proud to work with other projects within this group. Notably, the Blue Dragon protocol is now part of General Motors’ Eclipse uProtocol, shaping the next-gen vehicle platform.

Eclipse Zenoh automotive technologies

Eclipse SDV leads the automotive industry’s open-source movement. Sarah Gallian, the Programme Manager, spearheads their mission to create an open-source software platform and encourage industry collaborations.

The group believes open-source is essential but insufficient alone. Two critical elements for success are contribution and collaboration. Contribution involves transferring IP rights to a foundation like the Eclipse Foundation for a level playing field, while collaboration fosters a sustainable and predictable environment.

Sarah Gallian accepted our invitation to share more about Eclipse SDV’s role in the industry during our Zenoh User Meeting 2023.

Zenoh unifies car communication from the MCU to the cloud of vehicles

If you’re new to our community, Zenoh is a new communication protocol that aims to solve the complex challenges of building a system that spans from microcontrollers to data centres.

The current approach of using multiple protocols to communicate and deal with network addresses has become increasingly problematic. This creates a digital Frankenstein and projects hard to manage. 

This communication protocol was created to address these limitations and provide a more data-centric solution. It aims to simplify the integration of different technologies and offer higher levels of abstraction to support complex applications.

The Integration of Eclipse Zenoh into Fleet Management Blueprint

The Eclipse SDV working group ecosystem offers essential components to address the challenges of Software Defined Vehicles.

Utilizing the blueprints initiative, various projects are combined to demonstrate technology tailored to real-world automotive scenarios. One such example is the Fleet Management blueprint, designed specifically to cater to the needs of truck fleet management.

The problem: Challenges in Truck Fleet Management

Imagine trying to navigate rush hour traffic with no standardised road signs. That’s the challenge facing the commercial fleet industry today. There’s no common way to organize data from trucks, making it difficult for fleet management software to work seamlessly. This means companies have to rely on custom solutions for each type of vehicle, hindering the creation of comprehensive fleet management systems.

Traditionally, data management has employed separate communication technologies for real-time (“data in motion”) and stored (“data at rest”) information. This approach results in a tangled network of dependencies on software artifacts.

Moreover, regardless of their locations (even in different cities), all truck data is channeled to a centralized, monolithic cloud platform. This centralized approach is akin to directing everyone through a single congested city center, irrespective of their destination being on the opposite side of the country.

The Solution: COVESA VSS powered by Zenoh

To tackle the challenge of inconsistent truck fleet management, the solution combines a smart communication technology and a data translator.

  • Zenoh: is a pub/sub/query protocol unifying data in motion, data at rest and computations. It elegantly blends traditional pub/sub with geo distributed storage, queries and computations, while retaining a level of time and space efficiency that is well beyond any of the mainstream stacks.
  • Eclipse KUKSA.val: Abstracts the vehicle data and interface to a common format based on COVESA Vehicle signal specification.

Our colleague and fellow Zettler, Phani Gangula (Senior Solution Architect focusing on automotive), wrote a blog post discussing unlocking fleet efficiency with COVESA VSS powered by Eclipse Zenoh over the Zetta Platform.

How Data Flows within the FMS Blueprint

In the blueprint, truck data is translated by the KUKSA broker. It takes signals from vehicles and changes them into a common format set by the COVESA Vehicle Signal Specification (COVESA VSS). This standard language organizes vehicle data neatly.

With COVESA VSS, fleet management providers can get information from different trucks easily, regardless of their make or model, using the Vehicle Signal Specification.

Now, this VSS data moves over Zenoh from the trucks straight to the services that need it. It acts as a single communication channel, removing the need for complex communication setups, making data delivery smoother. But Zenoh does more than just transport.

Picture Zenoh routers as small data storage hubs near the trucks – perfect for situations where real-time access is vital. This “edge storage” keeps important data ready. No matter where the data is stored, Zenoh Query works like a clever search engine focused on data. It automatically finds the quickest way to get the specific data the services need.

Zenoh distributed queries

Here is a summary of the features that makes Zenoh a perfect match for Fleet Management Systems:

  • Streamlined Communication: Unlike complex multilayered transports, Zenoh uses a single, efficient protocol to move data from trucks to fleet management systems. This ensures fast and reliable data transfer, minimizing delays.
  • Intelligent Routing: Dynamic environments with constantly moving vehicles are no problem for Zenoh. Its adaptive routing algorithms automatically adjust data flow based on real-time changes, ensuring optimal performance even as your fleet grows or moves around.
  • Distributed Storage: Zenoh routers act as mini data centers near your vehicles. This “edge storage” keeps critical data readily available for real-time needs, like diagnostics or immediate decision-making.
  • Resource Efficiency: Zenoh optimises data transfer and storage, minimizing the strain on your systems. This allows for efficient operation even with large and dynamic fleets.

Open-source software increasingly became a crucial component in the development and certification of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

Consequently, ZettaScale Technology, a leading developer of open-source communication middleware set the stage to delve deeper into this topic.

This is why we hosted a panel titled “Open Source and Certification in Automotive” to explore the synthesis of open-source methodologies with stringent automotive safety standards.

This initiative aimed to bridge the gap between innovative open-source approaches and the rigorous demands of automotive safety.

Panel Composition and Expert Insights

The panel had a lineup of experts who were at the forefront of automotive and software technology:

  • Angelo Corsaro, CEO & CTO of ZettaScale, moderated the discussion, bringing his extensive knowledge of distributed computing systems.
  • Daniel Krippner, Open Source Technologist at ETAS, shared insights on integrating open-source practices within traditional automotive development frameworks.
  • Dana Vede, SW Process Engineer at Eclipse SDV, discussed the challenges open-source software faced with automotive safety certifications like ISO-26262.
  • Frédéric Desbiens, Program Manager, Embedded, IoT, and Edge Computing at Eclipse Foundation, shared his experience with ThreadX. He explained the transition from Microsoft to open-source.
  • Steven Hartley, Senior Software Architect at General Motors, shared his experience with making GM’s uProtocol open source. He also discussed its role in the Eclipse SDV project.
  • Rex Schilasky, head of Rapid Prototyping Software Platform Development at Continental, provided insights on using open-source solutions in automotive projects.

Addressing Certification Challenges

Zenoh in automotive innovation

The panel explored how open-source software could have met and perhaps redefined the criteria for automotive safety and functional safety standards.

Traditional interpretations of these standards often seemed incompatible with open-source practices.

However, the discussion aimed to shed light on how these apparent discrepancies had been reconciled to foster innovation while ensuring safety.

Why This Matters?

An increasing number of OEM and Tier-1 companies looked at open-source software to accelerate and share the cost of innovation.

They also aimed to modernise software development within the automotive industry.

This posed new certification challenges. The traditional interpretation of norms like ISO-26262 seemed contrary to many open-source practices. But was it really?

This panel explored pioneering activities in open-source certification. It discussed the challenges, opportunities, practices, and changes needed for standardisation norms.

The event streamed live on YouTube on the 30th of April at 3 pm CET provided a platform for software engineers, software architects, developers, and automotive industry professionals to gain direct insights from leading experts in the field.

During this living session, Angelo Corsaro said: “ZettaScale played an active role in establishing an innovative and viable Open-Source framework for next-generation automotive.”

Consequently, as the release of Eclipse Zenoh 1.0.0 approached, and with major players like General Motors already on board as early adopters, the automotive industry was on the brink of a major shift.

The insights from this panel had the potential to dictate the direction of automotive software development in the years to come.

Zenoh-Flow is a distributed data flow programming framework based on Zenoh. Both of them are Eclipse Foundation open-source projects. Zenoh-Flow focuses on performance, real-time capabilities, and control over these aspects thanks to a declarative approach. 

It is developed in Rust, a programming language gaining traction in the automotive industry due to its memory and concurrency safety guarantees.

Genesis of Zenoh-Flow

It started as an exploration of the potential of Zenoh as a performant and easy-to-use building block for distributed applications. 

The aim was to replace Pylot’s data flow framework, assess gains in ease of use, deployment, and performance. This first iteration has already yielded improvements on all fronts! 

In particular, it removed a bottleneck in the processing, which translated to a continuous rendering of the autonomous driving simulator in some scenarios.

Zenoh-Flow for Software Defined Vehicle Architectures

It aims to offer several benefits compared to existing solutions. Some of these key benefits include:

  • Declarative approach allows quick modification of data flow, ensuring ease of use and fine-grained control for developers and integrators.
  • It enables seamless integration with automotive middleware, ensuring effective communication and data transfer across systems.
  • Real-time capabilities include task priority association, time budget allocation, CPU core pinning, and task parking.

Julien Loudet, the Project Lead, hosted a presentation during the Zenoh User Meeting 2023 and delved deeper into the its performance and what’s coming next. 

Real-time Capabilities

Real-time capabilities are essential for the automotive industry and, in general, for any safety-critical application. Hence, one of the streamlining mechanism’s main objectives is to offer precise yet easily adjustable control over each computation

This control will eventually allow to address these requirements. The possibility to easily (though safely) tweak the execution will allow for quick development cycles and, ultimately, faster delivery.

In addition to what we describe below, these offerings position Zenoh-Flow as a valuable framework for future automotive developments.

Assigning Priorities

When working with a streaming framework, it’s crucial to prioritize tasks. Prioritizing ensures higher-priority tasks are executed first as needed. By assigning priorities, you can ensure that higher-priority tasks are executed first, depending on the specific requirements of your environment. 

This allows for efficient task management, especially in real-time computing scenarios

In addition to this static assignment, it’ll be able to dynamically adjust priorities, catering to the unique needs of automotive applications in changing environments and ensuring seamless task execution.

CPU Core Pinning

Though in a prototyping stage, it offers the ability to pin a task to a specific CPU core, providing control over task allocation and ensuring optimal performance. 

By pinning a task to a specific CPU core, you can effectively manage resource allocation and guarantee safety in automotive applications.

This feature is another major step towards precise control over computational resources, enhancing the real-time capabilities of Zenoh-Flow and making it a valuable framework for automotive developments.

Integration with Automotive Middleware

Its integration with automotive middleware is a critical aspect that ensures effective communication and data transfer within the automotive stack. 

By leveraging Zenoh, it’s already compatible with automotive middleware, such as Cyclone DDS or the upcoming µProtocol. This guarantees efficient data transfer, making it a valuable framework for future automotive developments.

This integration is another example of how Zenoh-Flow caters to the specific requirements of automotive applications.

Rust Language and Zenoh-Flow

Zenoh-Flow, in Rust, a programming language gaining automotive traction, offers control over data flow for software-defined vehicles.

Rust has been recognised and certified by industry leaders. The first RUST compiler was certified for ISO 26262. Testimonials from Volvo engineers make it an ideal choice for automotive applications. Renault does it as well and Frédéric Ameye (a Cybersecurity Architect previously working at Renault) gave a talk about it on RUST Nation UK in 2024. 

Limitations in languages like C and C++ drive rising preference for Rust in modern development, particularly in autonomous driving.

Conclusion

As an open-source initiative, Zenoh-Flow is continuously evolving to meet the dynamic demands of the automotive industry.

Ongoing work on custom scheduling, real-time capabilities, and seamless integration positions Zenoh-Flow as a valuable resource for future automotive apps.
